Antique: Jan Herzog - Portrait of Vaclav Herman
Oil on canvas 40 x 34 cm. Period and style: biedermeier. Vaclav Herman (1831-1916) was a townsman from Plzen, a gilder. In July 1856 he took in the sick Josef Kajetan Tyl (1808-1856), the famous Czech theatre director, playwright, writer and creator of the Czech national anthem, who died three days later. Vaclav Herman arranged his funeral and the deceased’s children lived with him for one more year. Portrait of a young seated man with a black tie around his neck, white vest and shirt, black jacket. Original paper label on back of stretcher frame with description. The author of the original gilt frame with decorative carved mouldings is the portraitist Vaclav Herman. West Bohemia, Pilsen around 1850. Total size with frame 50,5 cm x 44,5 cm.
